    Not sure I agree with this. Abuse can make people feel worthless and develop inferiority complexes. Self defeating behavior can also stem from this problem.

    Very worth remembering that and very true....this in the sense that if people project worthlessness / inferiority onto you - and you know it not to be true, it just bounces back off again. Things hurt because past of us agrees with the put down.
