Israel and the militant Islamist group Hamas announced Tuesday that they had agreed on an exchange that would free about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in return for Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held captive in the Gaza Strip for more than five years.

Why is the life of one Jew worth 1,000 Arabs? It is nuts the way Hamas devalues the Palestinians.

as he is a staff sgt in the isreali army, it seems a political ransom

some ask for millions in dollars exchange 1 person
some ask for thousands of persons in exchange for one human body

human life in some places is seen as cheap and held as a commodity

there are those like Hamas and Hitler that see others, or has seen others, as being a lower life form than themselves

i am sure he is glad he is going home and seeing his loved ones after 5yrs though, no matter the cost of how he was freed

This, if it goes through, will just be a model for more Israeli kidnappings.
One country pays a high ransom for their "political" military officer; the other, strap a bomb to one of their own to kill civilians.
Why? It is what they do. No shame. If the Israelis did anything and everything they could do to destroy their enemies, there would be few left. They do not target civilians. I remember a man used to pay the families to send their children against the Israeli populace with bomb belts strapped to them. His name was Saddam Hussein. So much hatred mostly in the name of their religion to rid the earth of the Jewish people. Radicals they are called and everyone has radicals, but Gaza could have been bulldozed into the sea many years ago. It is a shame to humanity.

Personally if I was in charge and I had a neighbouring state kidnapping and killing my citizens I'd bomb them into the stone age regardless of 'who did it'.
