LGBT Characters in Comics

As some of you might have heard, Marvel and DC have recently taken steps forward in their attempt to be inclusive and show progressive ideas regarding LGBT rights. In Marvel, Northstar's x-men is finally marrying his partner. DC has stated that they will reveal one of its major iconic characters as gay.

So my question is, what are your views on this? There's been a lot of conservative groups urging for boycotts on both of these companies, and it's likely to cause some controversy among some fans. Which character do you think they will "out"?

Some say this is all being done for the sake of publicity, and some also say politics is being played in this decision. I'm personally happy that gay characters are being portrayed more openly and positively by the media.
 
It's fine to make characters lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transexual assuming it fits the character and they aren't just doing it BECAUSE they want a LGBT character. That is an important distinction. It should also probably be reflective of the actual amount of people in these groups in real life society, I believe often times the media may overrepresent the gay population. Not really historically speaking but currently speaking.
 
What is the point? They aren't super because they are gay, unless they are super gay and then that is probably going to just manifest itself as pornographic. Inclusiveness for the sake of being inclusive is dumb. I wouldnt say the comics are exclusive either because look at those costumes! The ideal human body is celebrated with the painted on costumes.

I dont care that they are doing it, but why make an annoucement about it? "Look how great we are, we have gays now!" I dont think this will draw more readers. Instead, the reason is they just getting their name out there by making something story-worthy for the Huffington Post resulting in free advertising.

On the other hand comics are about showing new ideas to little kids so they will accept them when they get older; so I guess if you have the money to shape the future how you want it to be then go for it.
 
I think it's good as a show for the readers, both young and old. "Look, we endorse teh gays!" Which can / does seem like a marketing ruse, BUT it is good because it's showing that yes, tolerance towards GLBTQ people are good and normal and as wholesome as your superheroes. Good for the readers; for..the more tolerance, the better?
 
As long as it is holistic and excludes fake romance or stereotypical features, then sure why not. Also, it should be true to life.

But honestly, I would like to see how these kinds of characters could actually "sell" to the public. Would such characters end up like the new BBC Sherlock, who is hinted at being homosexual---and yet conveniently single and presumably celebate? And if indeed the public---in its real, unguarded moments---actually prefer heterosexual, then perhaps it goes to show what true archetypal, gut-level heroism is heterosexual, especially the version that is uncorrupted.

I would like to see also multiple aspects of the characters---not just the side of them that tries to save the day. Perhaps romance is in order, to the degree of the Spiderman movies with a limit to the pornographic nature (since that is one-dimensional).

But if it does not sell to the general public, there would be many questions to answer, such as: 1. Did it not sell, because LGBT characters---while a reflection of society---simply are not true to the basic foundations of human existence? 2. Did it not sell, because people require veiled forms of homosexual demeanor in order to enjoy them? Or both.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if the Riddler and Poison Ivy from the Batman series were gay/lesb.
