I thought the Lucifer series came after The Sandman. If that's the case then his wings were cut off by Morpheus in "Season of Mists".

He retrieved the in the first novel before creating a new reality by sundering his brother Michael Demiurgos. The story is a bit more complicated, but in essense, Samael has his wings back.

Well that sucks. Guess some writers can't handle their characters being as awesome as possible. One thing I learned from the sandman is he wasn't without his limits.
