Did anyone do martial arts growing up, is it a kind of rite of passage? Did anyone keep it up into later life? I've seen some absolutely amazing martial artistry stunts pulled off in youtube videos by little kids who really put the whole idea of martial ranks in colour of belt or anything like that to shame, although I dont know if they kept it on or it was just something like a saturday morning sports club or class.

I posted this here because I'm really interested in the relationship between martial arts, in the broadest possible sense, and philosophy or religion.

There's not much connection between philosophy or religion and martial arts in the west. Common themes are respect and integrity but that's about the limit of it over here.

A lot of parents have the attitude that they are not going to pay to send their kids to classes to "learn some asian mumbo jumbo" so most of the time unless you find a private instructor that isn't in the phone book, you're not going to see that stuff taught. And as for the MMA community, they're mostly interested in stuff that works in a real fight pretty much and will often shoot down anything they deem impractical.

Um yeah that stuff is pretty niche. Go through town around here and you'll see dozens of places to learn Karate or Soo Bahk Do or whatever else but you're not going to find a place that teaches armored sword fighting. Most people don't even think about that to tell you the truth - it's a bit fringe.

Edit: and it kinda goes without saying that if any religion does get connected to martial arts, it'd be the most dominant one. Bit obvious IMO.

Defensive.

Again.

Fail.

So this post felt a little too personal for comfort. So I edited it. But long story short, martial arts are awesome and are definitely a right of passage.

To get the most out of martial arts; you need to enjoy physical contact. I know it sounds obvious but there are many people who join a martial arts and are terrified of being touched or only there to learn the "concept" but enever devote the time to actually practice and wish to get better. Self motivation is important and you have to enjoy the physical aspects of the training. The philosophical approach will depend if you chose a traditional or more modernized martial arts practice. They both have something to offer and you should try them out before committing. I would say you need to devote at least 5 to 10 years in order to fully understand the arts and what it has to offer. You will not be exposed to advanced martial arts knowledge until you prove yourself over and over. You also need to be ok with being pressurized to perform and prove yourself over and over through the belt system.
