Not my railgun:

Not a great railgun, I think half his projectiles turned into plasma due to the heat and resistance because they aren't well initiated (shooting from dead stop), but he does shoot a few of them across the room. It's a railgun.

The shiny lights awake true desire.
Only my railgun can shoot it for certain
It's piercing through with no reason to stop
And will continue to run, no matter what the pain

That's not a rail gun,

Hell this ins't even a rail gun.

This is a rail gun.

First of those is a coilgun.

Second one is actually the reason I made this thread. Same principle but a hell of a lot bigger and doesn't turn the projectile into plasma.

What the guy made really is a railgun. It's just a really tiny and not very good one.

A bipolar gun??

I guess you could call it that?

One rail is connected to positive and the other is connected to negative so the charge travels in one direction down one rail, across the conductive armature, and back through the other rail. This creates a swirling magnetic field around all of the conductors and because the current makes basically a u-turn, the fields line up in one direction and according to the left hand rule creates the Lorentz force which happens to point down the rails - 'down the barrel'. So it pushes the armature down the rails which carries and extends the contact loop with it, continuing to drive it forward until it leaves the rails and breaks the circuit.

Even if the armature turns to plasma it still works because plasma is conductive, which is why that home made railgun I posted still counts as a railgun. You can see it push the plasma down the rails several times. Some railguns actually use plasma like this on purpose.

I just want to point out that when the U.S. finally get's these rail-guns online these things are expected to hit targets fifty miles away. Making it an infinitely cheaper and safer method of delivering munitions over long distances.
