Terror threats close down New Year's Eve fireworks in both Paris and Brussels. Brussels cancelled all public celebrations.

Terror threats and risks to large assemblies of people.

Poor bastards. It's getting to be like living in the Middle-East.

In Brunei, you can get a 5 year prison term for having Christmas lights, or wearing a Santa hat in public.

Happy New Year! Don't let em break you.

*To anyone in Paris, or Brussels: hope you lit a few sparklers and popped some campaign. *

The Cult of Capitulation is currently gaining momentum, it seems. Did you know that Geert Wilders is facing a re-trial for expressing his criticisms of Islam? A trial. In the Netherlands. For exercising his right to free-speech.

Perhaps his conviction by the Dutch would appease their guests of honor, so that everyone can get along with their peaceful dialogue and mutual understanding.

I hope the people don't surrender. What good is it living in a free country if you can't be free to celebrate as a society. Why do people cower when their freedoms are threatened? Fuck'em, go out and dance, and have a great time together. Eat drink and be merry.

This is the world liberal minded people have created. And then they want to have their cake and eat it too. Ask for conservatives to fix the problems or dont ask and just step back and let them fix it. History repeats time and time again.

Well, I see your point, but if there is intelligence that the general public is not aware of indicating serious danger to people (another fish in a barrel terror situation), I don't really consider it "surrender" but rather a sad and necessary potentially life saving measure. Everyone loves FDR's quote "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself," but sometimes we are reasonably afraid of things like mass shootings, suicide bombings, dirty bombs etc, and it's really a government responsibility to protect people from these things. I think people can party pretty freely, but it seems some traditional municipal events have been shut down, which is a pity, but I don't think an impingement of freedoms.

I know it's complicated, but it upsets me just the same :-(

I think this problem will only get worse as more Muslims migrate into Europe (obviously). More ghettos, more violence, more terror and so on. And this is why the National Front (France's most popular party - also a far-right nationalist party) has the support it does. Many French understand that they're losing their country to Muslims and that many of these Muslims aren't so peaceful. Forty percent of the National Front's supporters believe the majority of the Muslims in France are fundamentalist. Ninety-nine percent of the National Front's supporters believe there are too many foreigners in France; seventy percent of French in general believe there are too many foreigners. It's a commonly held belief.

Since the 1970s millions of Muslims have entered France and are currently eight percent of France's population. Muslims are a large minority and there are many Muslim ghettos in France that are profoundly disconnected from French society. Many of the Muslims in these ghettos don't even speak French. And it's in these ghettos, which normally have extremely limited policing, that Islamists foment hatred and encourage anti-Western sentiment. I imagine this is where these threats are coming from. As long as these ghettos exist, violence and terror will be problems for France.

In short, expect more of the same in the future.

Personally, I don't see why France - and every other European country with a Muslim problem - doesn't police the hell out of these ghettos. Reinforce the local police with military personnel. Make sure everyone understands that the law will be upheld and that order will be maintained. Straightforward, no? I mean, it'll be hard to terrorize others when there are hundreds of soldiers with assault rifles patrolling their neighborhoods. I imagine this would help solve the drug and rape problems as well.

Edit: Of course, deporting those who fail to assimilate is ideal, but people tend to think deportation is about as bad as genocide.

I'm not against deportation per se. I don't think the idea is as bad as genocide. The main difficulty that concerns me about it is being able to discover who needs to be deported using methods that are both effective and just.

Deportation is certainly an option. You could make deportation mandatory for any set of conditions. In Australia, if any immigrant has been sentenced to 12months or more jail, they are immediately deported at the end of their sentence; and forbidden from entering the country again. At present the wheels are in motion to bring the automatic deportation trigger down to any 6 month sentence. You could also add deportation for more than 3 months unemployment within any 12 month period.

As long as the envelope is being pushed, I would ban Islam in all European countries. This option would not be as difficult as it might sound, because presently there is no international law against the banning of a particular religion/ideology.

I would too and I believe one day it will be the law. It's only a matter of time. Many people need to experience Islam first-hand before it becomes a palatable idea for them though.
