I've been thinking a little about public servants today... oh for about 2 minutes or so. Tell me what you think of the following:

So in this example lets take the police...

The police are public servants so they serve the public. The private is part of the public, but the police dont serve me because I am private. So who exactly is the public?

They protect you but not your private parts.:m037:

They don't serve private interests, i.e. those interests not shared by a significant enough part of the population to designate tax money towards protecting.

If you want your private interests protected (other than your private property and civil liberties), then you would have to appeal to your local community as to why it should be in their interest to do so.

More accurately, the police aid in the enforcement of laws for the public benefit. Yes, we are assuming that the law operates to the public's benefit, which it sometimes arguably does not; furthermore, laws are sometimes made that are in the interests of private parties because of the democratic system.

Basically, public servants do what the elected and appointed officials in the democratic system, with the help of lots of backroom lawyers and lobbyists, designate them to do, and they must act within certain constraints.

They (try to) maintain that level of public (common to all) order, so that people can lead their private lives without unjust/unlawful interference from others.

It has been an issue before.

I think it is in Orwell's 'Coming Up For Air' that there was a footnote to do with the militaristic nature of much of Europe by the 1930s.
That the police were not really wanted because of the trade-off in privacy and liberty that came with the need for security.

A few people getting killed a year was considered, apparently, to be not too high a price.

It was understood then that the very rich don't need the police and the very poor don't have need for them and would be harassed more than they were protected.

Many bad things come from the middle classes taking at look back at their former selves...including Fascism arguably.
