The Brazilian Congress has just passed a catastrophic forestry bill that gives loggers and farmers free rein to cut down huge swaths of the Amazon. Now only President Dilma can stop it.

Fortunately, the timing is on our side -- in weeks Dilma will host the world’s biggest environmental summit and insiders say she cannot afford to open it as the leader who approved the destruction of the rainforest. She’s facing mounting domestic pressure, with 79% of Brazilians rejecting this new bill. Now, if we join them we can turn up the global heat and push her to axe the bill, not the rainforest.

Dilma could make her decision any day.

The Amazon is vital to life on earth -- 20% of our oxygen comes from this magnificent rainforest, and it plays a key role in mitigating global climate change. Over the last decade, Brazil has vastly reduced deforestation rates, achieving a 78% decline between 2004 and 2011. The reason? A world-acclaimed forestry law, strong enforcement and satellite monitoring.

But this dangerous new bill would open up an area the size of France and Britain combined to clear-cutting and gives loggers amnesty for all past deforestation crimes. This would not only spark total forest devastation in Brazil, it would also set a bad precedent for other countries. That’s why it’s so crucial that we all protect it.

Brazil is a rapidly developing country, battling to lift tens of millions out of poverty. Despite evidence that growth does not require deforestation, Dilma is under pressure from the powerful agriculture lobby that helped her get elected to cut down rainforest for profit. And it is an ugly battle -- activists are being murdered, intimidated and silenced. But ex-Environmental Ministers and people across Brazil have sent a clear message to Dilma that they want to save the Amazon. Now, it’s up to all of us to stand with them and urge President Dilma to remain strong.

The fate of Brazil’s rainforests is dangling by a thread. But, with President Dilma so vulnerable to public pressure right now, we can bring the global force of people power to get a win for our planet! Sign the urgent petition below and tell everyone -- the petition will be delivered by Brazil’s former Environment Ministers directly to Dilma:

Do signing these internet things even work? Why does the Amazon care about me, a nobody, in America?

Thats pretty funny. i have no idea why its linked to the Amazon store. Weird. I definately dont want to save the Amazon store. Im pretty ambivalent about it.

And yes, signing these internet things does work. If enough people care about something and are prepared to stand up for what they believe then the authorities have to listen. The authorities arent the ones in power- they are the minority and are our servants that are supposed to represent our wishes. We are the majority and we are the ones in power. This is true although most of us have been led to think the exact opposite of this. As long as someone is aware of something and they care about it, and other people feel the same way, things can and will change.

How have you succeeded so far with signing internet petitions?

How do you plan to stand up to the authorities if they decide to ignore a bunch of random people who they do not represent or serve?

A direct action group that I partcipate in- Get up- has been succesful in getting information out about issues that people are otherwise ignorant of, at garnering support, being able to provide citizens, ngos and the government with figures and statistics of people that are invested in the issue. The organisation that organised this petition- Avaaz has been succesful in the past with informing people and addressing issues. This information and the number of signatures is very important because it shows how many people give a shit and are willing to put their name to something. Governments in democracies only have as much power as they are afforded by their people. If enough people care about something, the government has to consider and represent their interest, otherwise they will get voted out.

The Amazon is an international and global concern. Although i personally have no jurisdiction there, along with most of the 'random' people, there are plenty of people in that nation that consider this a very important issue. This is about supporting those people and standing up with them. Govenments cow to all kinds of pressures and most sell out to the highest bidder. Their position is only as safe as we allow it to be, especaily in democracies. If the authorities decide to ignore this situation, i daresay there will be alot of pissed off people that will protest and make a lot of noise. In this global community we live in, it is hard for individual nations to keep their business to themselves. We all learn about it soon enough and international reputation and pressure is important. Although i know that the corporations and the Money is the 'highest bidder' in this situation, I also think that people power is more powerful.

If you care about something, its always better to do something than nothing. Even if you do something and it fails, thats better than doing nothing and accepting what you think is inevitable failure.

Kill the trees. They're no friends of mine

It is said rain forests around the world act as the Earth's air conditioner.
Personally, I think the cutting of the rain forests has had the biggest impact on our changing weather patterns.
More so than anything else humans have done.

Everybody is talking about the air and oxygen. What about the sheer beauty and mysticism of the wildlife??? That was my motive...

Those spiders are so beautiful! I used to collect spiders as a kid. I would spend hours in the hills catching them and putting stuff in their webs. Here are some of my favorite spiders, I have owned all three as pets.

The yellow garden spider. These spiders weave beautiful strong orb webs with thick silk. Their webs are not that sticky but they are very strong, similar to a female black widow. These spiders can be hard to keep in jars because they weave large orb webs that are always vertical, never horizontal.

The American wolf spider! A fast and ferocious hunter that stalks it's territory at night. The female wolf spider is also a loving mother and cares for it's young until they are able to survive on their own. It carries it's young on it's back and protects them.

The black widow! I have kept these spiders as pets and bred them. These spiders have beautiful round and shiny abdomens. They can also have very unique and distinct designs on the back of their abdomen. The red hour glass is their trademark, it symbolizes time, which is fascinating because time is critical after being bit by the powerful and venomous black widow. This spider is humble and secretive, it will only bite as a last defense. But if it chooses to bite... you will know.

=)

I've also owned praying mantises, I have fed them spiders.

yea they're like legit oompa loompas

I think it could help to lobby private companies to base part of their operations in Brazil, to lift the economy.

The only problem is, I imagine, that Brazil would have few skilled workers - so immigration and taxation policies in that country would also have to be tweaked to make it attractive to foreigners.

oompa loompas eat lots of candy silly! The pygmies probably survive off an organic and natural diet.

they could eat the shit ton of spider monkeys that live in the trees

they can just pick them right off the gigantic spider webs made by wanna be spider monkies

What has global warming got to do with trying to get finance and software companies to open offices in Brazil?

If Brazil can move its economy away from primary industries, the domestic pressure to log forests should be diminished.
