I am curious about strange sightings of things you may have had--whether you think they are supernatural or very natural and just unexplained phenomena.
I also wonder if anyone has seen something similar to what I have seen...
This happened to me a few years ago, but through casual web browsing, my memory was jogged...
About 5 years ago, an ex boyfriend and I were sitting on a beach in Gary, IN on Lake Michigan. We were talking and just looking out at the water, and it was night.
A large silhouette skimming the water crossed our line of view. From what I can remember, it was large and thin.
We had to have been at least 30 feet away from the water and I could see it skimming the surface quite well. It had a very large wing span and the wings were webbed. It had long, thin legs that bent beneath it. I remember a small head, I can't remember more detail about the head because I was so taken with the strange wings and the even stranger way it was flying.
It was very clumsy--at least it seemed clumsy to me because it didn't fly gracefully like birds usually do.
It would sink down all wobbly in the air once it closed its wings and then rise back up when they opened. So it's flight path looked like this: ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
I remember being afraid that it would see us and hoping that it wouldn't, so I stayed really quiet. I think my ex felt the same way because we both were silent until it passed from our view. It never noticed us. We both saw it--we talked about it and had no idea what it could have been. Besides having wings, it looked nothing like a bird and flew nothing like any bird I have seen. We both joked after words that we had seen the "Jeeper Creeper" (from the movie.)
This summer, my brother told me of something similar he had seen. He and his friends were in the backyard at night, and he saw a creature with a giant wingspan--and the wings were webbed. He said it was very large and had very thin legs and arm-like things. He described the flight pattern to me and it was just like the strange flying thing I had witnessed.
He watched it fly and perch on a pole. They weren't near Lake Michigan, but they were less than a mile from a much smaller lake...
I've looked up birds of prey in this area that are nocturnal and could find nothing matching the description of what we both saw. My brother and I both wondered if it were a giant fruit bat.. but why would something like that be skimming the water? This sounds pretty crazy, but the closest I've come to identifying it is the kongamato, a sort of pterosaur.
So I wonder if what we saw is some kind of living dinosaur... or some kind of bird I have no knowledge of..
