Don't let the word "intermediate" fool you — intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) can hit targets significantly far away, as they have a range of 3,000-5,500 kilometers (approximately 1,860-3,410 miles). That's why, like ICBMs, they're classified as strategic ballistic missiles.

An Intermediate-range Ballistic Missile can carry a thermonuclear warhead.
The Soviet Union's RSD-10 Pioneer, an IRMB which used two-stage solid propellant and had a range of 5,000 km. It could hold up to three 150 kiloton warheads and was in service until the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

This treaty was abandoned in 2019.

An intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is a ballistic missile with a range greater than 5,500 kilometres (3,400 mi), primarily designed for nuclear weapons delivery (delivering one or more thermonuclear warheads).

The US said the weapon was a new, experimental intermediate-range missile based on Russia’s existing RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile.

The Pentagon was notified of its launch via nuclear risk reduction channels.

Putin has ordered production of more of these. He claims it was hypersonic. It travelled 15 minutes.

Russia was working on missiles forbidden in the treaty, making the treaty useless.

President Biden has given Ukraine the green light to use U.S.-provided long-range missiles for strikes deep within Russian territory, a U.S. official confirmed to CBS News on Sunday. The move is a major shift in U.S. policy that comes after months of lobbying from the Ukrainians. CBS News senior national security correspondent Charlie D'Agata and CBS News White House reporter Willie James Inman have more.

The weapons are likely to be used in response to North Korea’s decision to send thousands of troops to Russia in support of President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and comes after months of pressure from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. aol.com

Thank you to all the professionals who made answering this question easy.

Yes, thank you, Trump. Why did he end it? Dunno...
Probably because there was more interest in Space Force which he signed into action. Now that he's working with Musk it is starting to become even more clear. The information from that effort has us looking at Russia and China under a microscope and I'm certain that is making Puttin and Xi very uptight.

Biden shouldn't have authorized long range missile strikes into Russia this late in his presidency. Of course I said all I needed to say about that on the other thread.

Now that I've seen Biden and Trump shaking hands and smiling together in the Whitehouse, I'm thinking they both knew the plan. Kamala was just a way to appease the left while giving a gram of hope to their base. The pendulum swings back and forth but the force that propels its swing never seems to change.

Of course the hardworking people of the world are the ones that die. It's never the sons and daughters of the politicians.

Why not make a Trump bashing thread so we can stay on the subject. You guys are ruining this thread: already have. I can see the news media acting like this when reporting on such a thing?

Facts and different opinions from your own are not prohibitive of an open discussion thread.
If you want an echo chamber write in your personal diary.

The above was copied from NATO.

Should I wish to share an opinion, I'll make sure and distinguish it from known facts.

It isn’t usually the weapon that gets scrutinized after its use; it’s the person that chose to use it.

The availability of weapons actually promotes peace, but the use of those weapons promotes death.

I’m not in favor of anyone killing others.

Wyote, If I ever need your advice, which I don't see happening, I'll ask for it.

It's not advice, it's simply how forums work

The ballistic missiles need to deescalate and so does the war. This thread makes the same point I made the other day and that is, when one is launched, nobody knows the destination. Biden allowed longer range missiles and then Putin in return decided to demonstrate he could escalate with long range though he didn’t arm it. Everyone knows the rules of engagement in war, and that means Biden (and his handlers) are escalating this. This makes me believe that someone really wants this war to happen, and it sure as “F” isn’t the people.

If people don’t feel absolutely terrified by this they should. He literally just shot up what could easily have been seen as a nuke in the direction of two other countries (France and the UK) that have nukes.

Everyone take a breath. I know there’s lots of stress in the air.

Forums work with personal diaries?

I'll take a breath.

190 mile range missiles do not warrant what Russia launched. Yes, somebody wants this war.

If the person that uses the missile gets scrutinized, this can date back to Crimea.

Who can trust what this warhead could be from now on? Look at the direction.

OPINION

I think the IRBM fired by Russia is an upgraded and knockoff of the SS-20 missile Russia deployed in 1976. It could reach reach anywhere in Europe at 5,000 kilometers.

Edit to say the RS-26 is possibly where this came from, not the SS-20 I was thinking.

A video I posted recently discussed most all of Russia’s nuclear missiles.

Cheers,
