The prog thread

I'm a big fan of progressive music (mostly prog-rock, prog-jazz, "avant-prog") and I didn't see any thread dedicated to this, so here we go.

Starting with one of my favorites:

You want prog, I'll give you prog. Please put your hands together for the ever failing all time low, Domino!

Honestly I never completely understood 'prog' nor the purpose of it, but I'll try.

I didn't want to go into this but... what exactly makes this progressive? It's rock. But longer than usual. And maybe with more work put in.

In most cases I can find, prog just seems to be 'the same thing but better' (and not even always better) so... what exactly IS prog?

IMO artistry is to be expected so being more arftul and putting more consideration and production does not make a new genre (nor sub genre). It just means the typical prototype of the genre in question is well... typical.

Nevermind. I just looked up a list. A lot of artists I like are "progressive" and I didn't even know it (I just thought they were really good!)

Anyway. Here's Buckethead.

Prog-* is basically a label for something that is rooted in a certain genre, though uses any combination of experimental techniques not normally seen within said genre as a means of experimentation. Shifting tempos, time signature change, genre-combining, and use of uncommon instrumentation are all common defining features.

So really a lot of the time it just means "weird" music :p

Yeah. It turned out that a lot of bands that I listened to were this prog stuff. To me growing up this was normal rock. I never heard it called progressive until recently.

But I do like it when people do weird stuff. Especially stuff like Buckethead with the kill switch that he has on his guitar. Not many people do that.

Yeah, it's all still rock nonetheless. Also Buckethead is definitely a pretty original guitarist and entertaining character. Also, some of the weirder parts of Giant Robot really freaked me the hell out as a kid.

Help me understand better - Is this prog-jazz or just jazz?

I honestly can't get with any kind of label unless I immediately know it when I hear it.

I would call it progressive jazz, though it's still all just opinion :p

I like this. Kinda reminds me of Flying Lotus who is probably one of my favorite modern musicians

I can post some progressive house, but to be fair, the genre became quite successful, meaning that bunches of producers began to copy from other successful producers, witch by itself led to less innovation, therefore making the music less progressive.

Now I feel bad, can't post anything Progressive in here. Must whip myself 100 times on the back, the punishment isn't even as severe as you might think it is, it is nothing, I deserve more.

So ... this is early Progressive House Kanamori will agree

Prog metal and electronica are my favorites, in general. Concept albums also seem to be way above par, usually.

Progressive music isn't really a genre, it's more of a tag to add to musicians and bands that only loosely fit into their genre. I don't like the term experimental nor the idea that, nor the general idea that they aim for a artistic endeavor in their music. It comes off a bit pretentious, progressive music is just a bit different then what considered a part of their respective genres but not so diffrernt that thye land in or create a different genre.
