Advice on building a website?

I use a free host: www.byethost.com

I build my websites from scratch, so it has everything I need.

If you want a free domain-type name, I'd suggest uni.cc

My (sub)domain is "www.agapooka.uni.cc"

Don't bother checking how my site looks. I disabled it, because I'm slowly working on it. XD

As for free hosting, nobody can know you are using a free host if there are no ads and if the server is up and... if they don't do something to get a 404 error. :P

I'd recommend it only to get you on your feet and as a testing ground. You should use a reliable, dedicated hosting service with a company like the one BB described if your audience is serious and it is imperative that you make a good impression every time

Cheers,

Agapooka

Just to be clear whatever host you use its simply to find out who they are and were they are.

What I'm trying to point out is though no one may care. Its very easy to get info about who you host with and about site. Not trying to worry anyone but when you host your not going to hide who your hosting with.

Okay scrap the bluehost thing. I've loads of things going on but I still want to research web design, which means my Je wants to finalize things! But i rush into decisions. Restarting...

I'm confused a bit, a lot of hosts say they include a domain in their package. Is this good or not?

As suggested, I want to get a separate domain, then get a UK host. But almost all hosts give me a domain with the package. Can I ignore this or does that mean I have to go with their domain?

You should be able to register the domain you have with the host you choose: I recommend you send them a quick email confirming this is possible and the steps to do so.

I have no idea who offers decent webhosting in the UK unfortunately.

Lunarpages is not a bad at all either :)

Gah! [throws hand up in the air in frustration]

I'm so confused!

I have been asked to design a website for our meditation group sangha. I was looking for free hosting and a place to purchase a domain name. I thought if I did this little website then it would be easier to move on to designing my own. Boy was I in for a shock.

I appreciate what you guys have posted.
But honestly - I wish I had the funds to just hire you.

Wordpress and such stuff might be faster and easier, but if you want to build a portfolio I really recommend learning Javascript, PHP and MySQL. With a little databasing and some programming you can put together really awesome, interactive websites and web applications a lot easier than you might expect. I regret wasting so much time doing basic HTML and C++ when the PHP/MySQL combo was what I really wanted. Anyway, good luck.

You should never run a website for a business off a freebie site. It's too unreliable and you might end up with 'funny' and potentially 'offensive' adverts appearing which is very bad.

Try godaddy or something designed explicitly for business. It isn't too rigorous to even just put up a webpage with logo and some info, obviously, you need much more skill if you need to manage user accounts or such ilk.

However, if it is just a webspace to doodle on and store documents have you considered googledocs?

I appreciate your advice InvisibleJim. That's a good point about the content of forced ads.

Actually, I have found my way over to Google and am in the process of experimenting with designing a page.
Wish me luck! :)
