What are the consequences of quoting yourself, others, source material if any?

Always wanted to know, what are your thoughts?.

Are you awkward or comfortable to quote?
Is there a limit, can you over quote, under quote?
Is there a feeling and mood involved when quoting?
Is there a difference between segmented quoting and mass quoting?

context? why am I quoting? in daily conversation? I can;t really quote unless its a simple quote that I've heard/used many times? In a paper? I like quotes if they're concise. Often the things that I want to quote are somewhat vague and/or pure detail without much over-arching statements. If I want to reference that work I would have to copy whole pages, and thats just ridiculous, esp where I just want to reference the idea. Other than that, I don;t really have any distinctive ideas on how I should or should not quote.

This topic seems quite random and wayward. I don't quote people, nor do I see the point in it, Imo.

We should make our own quotes, not rely on others. I know that sounds mad cliche and hallmarky, but I believe it to be true.

hahah I was trying to be over dramatic.
*spills the salt and sugar on the table*

Mwhahhas, cough, well that turned out well.

Very comfortable. I see it as a transfer of a unit of information. Here, check out this unit of information that has totally rubbed me the right way, or clicked for me in some way, or made me think, reconsider, evaluate, has value to me. May it have value to you.

There is an aspect I do believe can be over quoting, but I don't think that is the type you are referring to. That is when in a response to one post another person quotes and responds to each sentence, or each idea, separately. I see this happening in discussion that are heated, a lot. Like political or religious discussions. The whole is larger than the sum of its parts, and a big idea, a feeling, a thought, it is more than the sum of the ideas it builds on. If you can't engage the post as a whole, the overall idea as one entity, but have to break it down to engage it in bits and pieces, I see it as a breakdown of communication. But then, in those cases, domination is usually what one tries to achieve, not communication, an exchange of ideas.

I don't know what the difference is between segmented quoting and mass quoting. I think I'm hitting a language barrier here. What does one mean opposed to the other?

What you said early, I was referring to that. That is breaking it down, having separate quotes as opposed to quoting the whole lot or massing quoting better or worse. I guess like multiple quoting and quoting long pieces.

I'm often undecided whether to quote or separate quote or if I'm imposing and then wouldn't quote and say my bit.

while the appeal to authority is a logical fallacy, it helps cement points you've made saying "look so and so said something very similar and he'sa heck of alot smarter then I am". Some times someone else just says it better.

Are you awkward or comfortable to quote?

I quote a lot from a lot of sources, so I would say comfortable.

Is there a limit, can you over quote, under quote?

1 per conversation, nevermore then three in a public speaking event.

Is there a feeling and mood involved when quoting?

not really, just when they come to mind and pertain to the subject

Is there a difference between segmented quoting and mass quoting?

depends on the medium of communication, mass quoting is fine on paper or the internet, but throwing in throw the entire "to be or not to be" speech around in everyday conversation would seem out of place.

that ought to do it
