Maybe I'm misreading you....but NIN did not write this song for Johny Cash. I do remember Trent Renzor saying something about Cash taking it and making it his song with this incredible cover, but it was indeed a song for NIN :)

It was mostly a joke, The NIN version has doesn't have any weight to it, But Cash's version has a lifetime of regret and pain to make every word powerful, so much so that It could make you think that NIN wrote the song for Cash.
