Gender sucks

Why don't they just check her for 'roids? That seems more reasonable to me.

I think it's funny that they needed a psychologist and a gender specialist for this.

Sex and gender are not the same thing.

Sex is physiological gender is...well pretty much not.

Complex? This is as simple as 'drop your pants' followed by 'yes/no'.

in some cases it's not as easy as that :)

Without going into too much technical details we all have the ability to grow both girl and boy parts from our genetic code. And the default setting is for the "girl" mode. The Y chromosome does not contain the actual penis inside but rather some commands to override the default setting. Sometimes that process malfunctions and a person who has XY genetic configuration is born with the apperance of a female. She grows up thinking she's a normal girl but can often posses increased muscular strength. This condition comes as unfair advantage over other women in sports competition - and for that reason we have gender tests. However the validity of the test is still questionable and it's usage in olympics had been suspended.

I am now educated, awed, and kinda scared.

Ahh the comfy gender binary, taken as universal truth by most people, even though there's plenty of instances where people don't fall so neatly into one box or another. Gender constructs are kinda stupid if you ask me. But hey, if the false assumption of "there are only boys and girls and nothing else" makes people sleep at night...

I don't get the whole digression on "gender", folks.
This isn't really a question about her gender, whatever that even means, it's about whether this individual can physiologically be considered to be female, by means of a very strict biological definition.
Should it matter? I guess that's up to the judges and officials to decide.

Well, like having mixed gender games, etc. It really shouldn't matter.

Well think that depends on your personality if you have a different outlook it really does matter and alot of people are really competitive, Think it should also depend on what type of games are in question,

Not to be sexist but there is a well noted physical strength difference between men and women. Although some women are stronger than men, The strongest man will be stronger than the strongest woman!

Games like snooker, darts, archery, motor racing (danika patrick), Golf (even though long drives could make a difference),

Ultimately If i was a female elite athlete whos whole life revolved around training to win, I would be well pissed if some guy got a sex change and beat me!

I'm not for 1 minute saying that she is a man. But I think there should be procedures (privtae procedures and regulations to protect the sport and the athlete)

Anyhow that was an usually long winded way for me of getting my point across!

I see your point, and obviously there will be physical strength differences between genders.

I suppose it winds me up is because when I go to martial arts competitions, i'm only ever put up against women because apparently we're too small and fragile to compete with men. I train with men at my Dojo because i'm the only female, so I don't see why gender makes a huge difference in all sports.

you should come to Ireland! they have mixed martial arts competitions, well in kenpo anyways ( havent said that think its u 15)! In some sports in doesn't make a difference.

I play tennis I'm ranked bout 80 in the mens ladder In my club and I can beat the no 1 Woman in the club (Just barely 7-6, 7-5) and she was on a bad day to be honest)

the number 1 guys would beat me 6-0,6-0,

I am all for some events being mixed, once the standard is equal!

But at top level sports with the exception of some I named above, I think its a good idea to have it split,

Sure take boxing (which I don't really like)

Its not just women who are discriminated against, what about weight groups in boxing, you couldn't have a lightweight vs a heavy weight. Its just safer!

I do ( I mean I try) to understand the female perspective, but there's two sexes for a reason and both have their pros and cons!

I do ju-jutsu, it's a samurai martial art, i'm slick like that ;D

anyway, I understand why there's gender splits, as you say some are necessary but for some sports there really shouldn't be a split just because your male or female. Personally, if I had mixed competition and a guy beat me, it'd just inspire me to train more. I know it'll be different for other people but some splits are there just for the label, i think.

yeah think we agree on having mixed tournaments, maybe just giving the option should be enough, maybe some romances could be kindled but the literal punching ones face :-)

would be funny!

Well having competed in grappling, freestyle wrestling and boxing in the past, it's of my opinion that women are at a severe disadvantage when it comes to fighting men because of the physical differences. You can spout that martial arts bullshit propaganda about "weaker" beating a "stronger" opponenet- that's just a marketing technique from the late 70's designed to bring in more profit for clubs.

If two equally skilled fighters, one a man and one woman, competed against each other but the man was naturally stronger, the odds are in his favour. So in order for the woman to win she would have to be of a significantly higher technical ability to the man, which is placing an unfair disadvantage of the female competitor because she would have to train longer and harder and have more experience than the other guy.

And if we consider that these two are professional athletes, how much more could the woman possibly train?

Oh now you've done it... don't you know men and women are 100000% identical!?!?!?!
