What do you think about the idea of "generation sensible"? Is it just a modern day myth invented by the establishment to discipline the populous and convince them that what they have to do and should do is what they are going to do anyway?

I heard about the idea today on BBC Radio 4, it is the result of a number of different correlates, young people in the UK are apparently "losing interest" in alcohol and drugs, moderating their use of both and there has been a decline in binge drinking or drug use, the rise of internet use has correlated a decline in unplanned pregnancies and pregnancy per se apparently and it all contrasts with Generation X if pundits be believed.

So is this some sort of propaganda move or is this a genuine social phenomenon? If it is a genuine paradigm shift in culture or social expectations then does it mean that there has been an improvement or has the loss of interest in these things been a consequence of something darker? The simpler pleasures, although correlated with personally or socially ruinous trends too, such as drinking or sex, have given way to the temptations of jihadi or other lunatic diversions instead and a sort of nihilism?

I dont believe it other than perhaps the idea there is less direct interaction between people because of the Internet.

I know in my experience I could not say that this is the case but then I work with a lot of young people who would be considered the delinquents and vulnerable to really self and socially destructive behaviour.

When younger I drank heavily when hanging out with friends. Being an introvert but not knowing at the time, wasnt part of the social interaction part of it as much as the fun part of it. Fun for me was racing cars causing hell which is hard to do on your own. Alcohol drugs made it easier to be around people. Put people in a position where there is less direct social interaction and perhaps there is less want or need of those things.

I have no clue about this of course. Just guessing. My bet is the study or what not is total bs. If anything drug use is and will continue to go up as the population increases.

I think effort needs to be made in the school system to explain to kids about their brain and how it works and why adding chemicals that effect its operation is bad. Not just the standard "drugs make you do stupid things" so bad, bad drugs.

But of course it will never happen. At that age I felt invincible. By all rights I should likely have already been dead because of what I did back then.

The internet is a drug

Technology is the drug.

Think of those early internet sites, or geocities. they were all bright and trippy. Internet is drug. Programmers are drug. Drugs are drugs drug drugs can I drugs too yes ok what maybe yes ok.

Interesting. I think it depends on who you're talking too. I think a lot of generation y is realizing that they have to work double as hard to earn a stable life as their parents did. This means that there is much more weight to achieve high grades, and a successful job. I also wonder if they're actually looking at the correct drugs that this generation is doing. A lot of kids are now using stimulants to get those high grades.

As for pregnancy- I think kids are still having sex, but they're likely being educated earlier about safe sex, and have greater availability to contraceptives and condoms.

I would be interested in reading more about the research on this!

This thread is the fifth google result for "generation sensible."

I think some younger members of gen y who came of age/whatever around the time of the horrendous financial kablooie are much more conservative and pragmatic than old people would like to talk about. It doesn't fit into their old person grumpy narrative. Not all, obviously.

The sex/drugs thing isn't really that important.

Gen Y peeps are becoming boring adults, because we kind of have to.

I often have to interact with young people at work, parting and alcohol still seem to be a number one pass time, gaming and drinking seems to be number two.

Well like I say it was on the radio, it was vague, like a lot of research sited on the radio is but it seemed to be promoting an idea that this sort of straight edge lifestyle was becoming popular unconsciously.

I actually wonder if the fact that soberiety and sensibility are trending, if they are, would account for the very noisy extremely bad cases of addicted, alcoholic and promiscuous which hit the news.
