People often use the term 'it took my breath away' and i've seen more than a few wonders in my time but walking into hagia sophia really did take my breath away
It is truely one of the most remarkable buildings on the planet. Its a dome built on half domes to spread the weight out over a larger area providing a vast interier space
The nearby Blue Mosque is certainly beautiful but the builders of the mosque could not match the ingenuity of the greek builders of the far older hagia sophia that they were trying to match for grandeur
to build the blue mosque they had to use 4 huge pillars like the legs of an elephant to hold up the central dome, thereby failing to match the interior scale of hagia sophia
i watched a documentary about this place once. it was one of those grand designs type of shows about ambitious architectural projects, the series was called "Megastructures". have you seen it? it was interesting to watch but there was a disturbing aspect to it. because the project has these immense climate controlled gardens inside glass roofed enclosures, and one of the gardens has to be air conditioned. but they had trouble powering the air conditioning, so they ended up fueling it with woodchips that they put into a furnace on site. but i remember thinking, where are all these woodchips coming from exactly? and how much does the existence of the garden justify burning them for fuel? the commentator of the documentary thought it was a great solution, but to me it seemed like wealth gone all wrong.
The places I want to go are not so much beautiful as they are historically intriguing, they involve a lot of mystery to them, and many of the structures we still cannot explain how they built without so little technology. Many of these structures also align with the stars and ley lines.
Tiahuanaco Bolivia (may have spelled that one wrong)
Toltec Empire
Hadrians Villa Alexandria
El Mirador
Teotihuacan
Temple of Dendera
Baalbek
Nazca
Gulf of Cambay
I also want to go to a few other places which have been posted here such as Angkor Wat and of course some of the more famous sites. There are so many beautiful buildings and architecture, I used to dream of being an archaeologist when I was 12. Unfortunately didn't follow that path but I still love learning about these ancient places...
