Megaupload Shut Down

I get a sense of an elephant in the room that a lot of the upset feelings are more because people are losing our place to share mp3s and videos and mangas and porn and such things. A.k.a OMGZ WE HAVE TO PAY NOW WHY UNFAIR D: masked under...'nicer', more honorable masks.

Yes, I am an user of Megaupload in that sense. >_>; And I feel no...right, to complain, much less cry injustice, in that aspect. *laughs* I don't think rejection of SOPA or PIPA means that piracy is alright and permissible under the majority rule.

Not to say there aren't users who uses Megaupload in a proper way that will be affected; and in that case, they are perfectly justified in being angry, and I'm sorry for them. Sorry that we who robs are causing you inconvenience.

I don't buy the idea that uploading to Megaupload makes the data their property. They were providing a service for people. I use other sites for backup and I would be supremely PO'd if they took it upon themselves to seize my data in an overly broad sweep w/o at least giving notice. They could have used keywords to find the vast majority of the illegally copied material.

As a metaphor, can they take all money that is put into say some fund that is being charged for money laundering, or only the money that they have reason to think is dirty?

Edit: Not sure if Megaupload actually does own the data.

In the wake of the Megaupload shutdown, FileSonic has disabled the file-sharing capability on its site, effective immediately.

"All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled. Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally," the company said in a note on its Web site.
FileSonic did not elaborate as to why it disabled file sharing on its site, but the move comes days after the Department of Justice took down Megaupload.com for massive copyright infringement and indicted several of its executives.
FileSonic, which has offices in Surrey, Great Britain and Hong Kong, said it partners with Vobile Inc. in order to filter copyrighted content. Vobile's "digital fingerprinting technology will allow FileSonic to block your copyrighted materials from being illegitimately shared through its service," FileSonic's Web site says.

After Megaupload, FileSonic disables file sharing.

We will be seeing more of this in the immediate future.

....and so the paranoia rolls

Here's a list someone posted on a message board a short while ago:
MegaUpload - Closed.
Rapidshare - status unknown
FileServe - Closing does not sell premium. File sharing already disabled.
FileJungle - Deleting files. Locked in the U.S..
UploadStation - Locked in the U.S..
FileSonic - the news is arbitrary (under FBI investigation). No longer allows sharing files.
VideoBB - Closed! would disappear soon.
Uploaded - Banned U.S. and the FBI went after the owners who are gone.
FilePost - Deleting all material (will leave executables, pdfs, txts)
Videoz - closed and locked in the countries affiliated with the USA.
4shared - Deleting files with copyright and waits in line at the FBI.
MediaFire - Called to testify in the next 90 days
What I find most disturbing is the sites that are simply banning all US IPs. We're quickly becoming pariahs online, and this will likely continue. After all, we've essentially wiped out a useful sector technology of overnight, and this is making a lot of people (NOT just pirates) very, very angry at us the world over.

Whenever a state bans you doing what you want and you don't find said activity troubling you don't stop the activity you do it elsewhere...

Les shock.
