There are tons of threads for sharing our favorite music, but I'm curious about what people here might not enjoy quite so much. This is only about personal preferences ~ no disrespect towards any genres or claiming they're bad because they don't suit one's tastes or anything like that 💙

For a long time, I didn't like the singing in a lot of musicals. I struggled to watch most musicals because of this. However, I watched Wonka recently, and it was so wholesome and pure, it cured me of my musicalphobia (thus cured, I went on to happily watch Wicked for the first time finally)

I feel I should add that the first time I tried watching Wonka, I made it about 30 seconds into the film. Then Timothée started singing and I was like "oh no" and ran away, didn't return to it again for a while. Turns out all I had to do was wait a few minutes to find the magic

I’ve always distinguished between what I like and what art or music is saying to me. They don’t to have to be likeable for me to appreciate something profound in them and worth my attention.

Having said that, I don’t like opera and oratorio on the whole though I make an exception for the Carmina Burana. But this comes from listening to it on hifi - I’ve only once been to a live opera and was bowled over by the visual and musical experience.

What I really don’t like at all is musak pap - the canned stuff in cafes and malls. Particularly at Christmas….

This was good when it first came - but now ….. 🤪🤪🤪

(it's also an old favorite of mine and I have it saved in my playlists on spotify, but this video ruined me for life. I can't listen to O Fortuna without hearing these lyrics now :sob:)

My favorite version of O Fortuna:

This would be an example of music from musicals that isn't quite my thing

I don't like most country, bluegrass, jam bands, or any similar style. There are exceptions.
I like most other styles of music, and I listen to a broad range of music.

I'm the same way. I understand the talent and the value, even if it isn't my cup of tea.

I've seen operas live several times and I've worked on opera productions. People claim everyone either loves or hates opera, and I think they're OK. I saw Salome, which is a dramatic opera, without the acting, dancing, or props. They just stood in front of mics. I was... disappointed.

I'm the same way! In regards to listening to a broad range of music too. I don't think saying that quite illustrates what I mean by broad though. My spotify account might be able to clarify that a little

I'm realizing that my spotify profile might not be the easiest to navigate because a large number of my playlists, instead of being named with something helpful and clear, are named with the first 3 letters of a word in Spanish that represents what the playlist is. I made my names this obscure on purpose. I know what the names mean, but no one else does (unless I tell them)

I'm the same way. I understand the talent and the value, even if it isn't my cup of tea.

Same here, I get a bit worked up about this too. That's why I tried to make sure there wouldn't be confusion about the intent of this thread when I started it. Wouldn't want to see any music attacked, so I added "PAX" just to be safe. I have this thing where I get protective of artists and music sometimes

For example, I have this playlist even though I don't listen to Britney's music, because I suddenly felt the need to support her after everything she has gone through (when I made this playlist I also went on a rant in one of my discord servers about how much she's endured from a young age)

My secondary school used to run a Gilbert and Sullivan opera every year and they were great. Knowing the teachers and the people who set them up and performed in them made a big difference to how I related to them. The quality of the performance is secondary when you know the folks and appreciate the work involved. One of my brothers was part of the stage manager team and there is a lot of work and stress involved. It must be fascinating being part of the team laying on a professional production of a serious opera..

Gilbert and Sullivan is definitely not my cup of tea outside of this though, but even so some of the songs still echo around in my mind.

Here’s another sort I love to hate 😂

This is the sort of thing I would listen to when I want to lighten my mood! I have a meme playlist just for this :D Silly little things that make me smile. Often when I'm feeling low I seek music that's also low and sink into it, but sometimes I try to pull myself back to happiness

Like this ~

How could you be sad while listening to this? Impossible

I'm not a Britney fan, either, but I DO support her, and I do like quite a bit of pop music. I cherry pick from genres.
I never understood why Max Martin (who wrote songs for most of the major pop artists when Britney was most popular) was so famous and it frustrated me that he overshadowed so many more talented acts and writers. He knows the formula, yes, but most trained musicians do.
