All other things being equal, if it's a choice between paying rent into a void and paying toward a mortgage, I would choose the mortgage, even if it's a 50-year mortgage.

But all other things are not equal.

I think the solution for the housing crisis in the West is to remove pointless construction height limits and fill our cities with 50-story high-rises. Because of economies of scale and the energy savings that come from increased density, this both cuts down on residents' living expenses and is better for the environment.

I have very little sympathy—not zero, but very little—for arguments about preserving views or historic construction.
