Didn't Dave Matthews used to be a bartender? I have got his band's album "Under the Table and Dreaming" and although I haven't listened to it in a while, I'm still pretty sure that it's very good. I have heard a lot of criticism of his voice. Clearly, his voice is not historically remarkable, but I find it easy to listen to - there's nothing offensive about it. I think it's inspirational that he managed to gather these other amazing musicians around him and do (so competently) what he loved and was good at.

Yes he was, at a bar where the people who eventually became part of DMB played pretty regularly. I think he originally didn't want to sing, but just play guitar, if I remember correctly. I absolutely love the band. I find the music to be very warm, inclusive, expressive, and full of living and dreaming in the moment; like lets all get together around a fire, drink some wine, dance, and enjoy the night under the stars. Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash, and Before These Crowded Streets are all very different albums and good in their own way. I've heard his voice and music heavily criticized, but I just ignore all that! It's just enjoyable.

I agree with you so much... I really like the way you describe it, very insightful. It's kind of "folksy" in the sense of getting people together informally who happen to play music and also who exist in a certain culture together... and yet I think it successfully goes beyond Folk as a genre (not that there is any special need to "go beyond" Folk)... and it all just comes together so well.
