Yes he was, at a bar where the people who eventually became part of DMB played pretty regularly. I think he originally didn't want to sing, but just play guitar, if I remember correctly. I absolutely love the band. I find the music to be very warm, inclusive, expressive, and full of living and dreaming in the moment; like lets all get together around a fire, drink some wine, dance, and enjoy the night under the stars. Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash, and Before These Crowded Streets are all very different albums and good in their own way. I've heard his voice and music heavily criticized, but I just ignore all that! It's just enjoyable.
