So I was watching a short film the the video game company Quantic Dreams the makers of Heavy Rain made in order to demonstrate their new engine (which is incredible btw.) and the plot got me thinking about the consequences of having robot slaves. For society in general I can see a lot of consequences, but for individualistic purposes the draw backs are few. You could essentially have slaves that have no feelings, would never wear out, you wouldn't have to pay them, and it wouldn't be reprehensible because they would not be humans, they would just be machines.

So would you buy or own one? What are your thoughts?

Here is the video that inspired the question:

For me it would depend on intelligence level, are they self-aware, can they learn new things? What do they perceive? If they're curious/motivated, self-aware machines... then no.

...I doubt I'd be able to afford one anyway.

For some reason, my brain automatically inserted the work "Sex" in between Robot and Slaves.

If you ever watched the movies Bicentennial Man or Artificial Intelligence, it would be hard to have a robot slave. It makes you wonder though if our society will advance to the level of being capable of creating robots that have emotional capabilities. Something to think about as far as where we are going. When you look at the early Star Trek series, and the old movie 2001, things like this could actually be in the future of our species. Food for thought. :noidea:

If they look like Jude Law ... I'm not so sure. LOL

I want to echo Jgirl here for a moment, when you say robot I assume you mean bunch of simple machines lashed together plausibly mixed with computer programmed to coordinate those simple machines so as they can complete complex tasks. The only difference between your lawn mower and a robot is a computer that tells it to mow without a person to guide it. Now when said robot starts asking why it has to mow the grass and figures out another way to pull it's weight around the house then I'll start questioning whether I need to charge him rent.

(Yes my robot sentient lawn mower is a guy and no it's not gay.[wouldn't even want to imagine what sex would be like])

My lawn mower doesn't mow the lawn by itself and the last time I checked it doesn't look like Jude Law. But there is the roomba vacuum, but it doesn't look like Jude Law either.

I think a lot of people would say they wouldn't now but then when they actually hit the market, and they finally get so popular that all of your friends have them and there's no shame in owning one, and you can design their personality based on whatever list of qualities you ever wanted in someone else-- then yeah, they would be popular.

Sort of like how in the early or even the late 90s/early 00s, online dating and forums like these were actually a source of shame for a lot of people.

I don't own an iPhone, though I'm definitely growing more open to the idea of owning one

All this talk reminds me of my friend Brian at our job at the Roller Skating rink in high school.

The owner told Brian to wash the dishes and Brian said "You don't have a dishwasher?" and the owner said back, "yeah I do, his name's Brian."

but hey wouldn't that be freaky if it did?

my point in my original post was that it's merely a more sophisticated machine. i wouldn't call them slave robots any more than i would call my dishwasher a slave.
(anyway, if my dishwasher was a slave i would be able to command it to also put the dishes away.)

Several, it's always better to delegate where you can so to move on to more important things.

You know what this thread needs, a definition of slave.

So here is what Google gave me.

Definition of SLAVE

1
: a person held in servitude as the chattel of another

2
: one that is completely subservient to a dominating influence

3
: a device (as the printer of a computer) that is directly responsive to another

No such thing as a robot slave, just a robot.

Slave and Robot are actually synonyms.

The word Slave comes from Slav, because at one point most bond servants in Europe came from Slavic countries. The word Robot comes from what those in Slavic countries call their slaves.
