The US system of healthcare is unsustainable.
The “affordable care act” has not covered everyone…has still left people in red-tape limbo…and for many is not much more “affordable” than what we had before.
Now part of this is the GOP trying to defund it, or not allow certain red states to opt out, the money that was allocated to them to set up health exchanges under this plan was turned away by several state governors leaving the people without healthcare or priced out of healthcare stuck again in limbo…on purpose, by politicians who disagreed with the law…took it to the Supreme Court and it has been upheld, though almost every week the GOP calls for a vote redacting all money and the affordable care act.
Medical bills are still the number one reason people file bankruptcy in the US.
We pay the most for healthcare that is ranked 47th in the world in terms of quality and outcomes.
We pay by far more than anyone for prescription drugs.
The healthcare industry spends ridiculous amounts of money lobbying our politicians to make sure they are paid first and foremost.

Wait times seeing a Specialist here is also ridiculous in most cases.
Last year, after the drug interaction I had that landed me almost in cardiac arrest, severely beta-blocked my heart, raised my triponin levels (the enzyme released when heart muscle dies) and is often and indicator of damage or severe stress put on the heart.
I spent the night in the hospital, which certainly is not the place to try and get any sleep…but who needs rest and quiet when they are severely ill?
It took me more than 3 months to get into see a cardiologist…even though I knew and worked with most of them…I didn’t ask for special favors though I could have.
So I waited 3 months to see if I would now have permanent damage done to my heart from this incident…the whole time I worry and wonder if there is?
The insurance also switched a week after I got out of hospital and no longer would cover the pain medication I was taking for the last two year previous because it was a “brand-name” medication, which the fucking drug companies have been reformulating for 30 years now, so they don’t have to make it a generic drug.
Though, most other countries can get the generic like it’s nothing…let’s see, if I had paid out of pocket…I was taking 4 pills a day at $4 a pill. Roughly $120 a month, and that would be on top of the medication I took for the arthritis which I was already paying $120 a month (this was after being covered by insurance…without it, it would be $1500+ a month)…so now I’m up to $240 for two prescriptions.
If you are on Disability or a Pension…I am sure you are on more than two prescriptions...
Many cancer drugs cost well over $100,000 for a year’s worth of medicine. In the fight against cancer, most people can expect to be on more than one drug. The bill for medications can escalate to nearly $300,000, a price tag that doesn’t include fees charged by a doctor or a hospital. Health insurance companies – including government polices like Medicare – don’t cover the full cost of these drugs. Some policies don’t cover some of these drugs at all.

This is why people are fighting for socialized medicine or as invisible suggested as a term - public healthcare.
I have worked in the medical field my whole career…first taking little old people in wheelchairs to dialysis…then as an EMT and Paramedic.
Spent a couple years in Cape May, NJ in the Coast Guard as a Medic.
Came back…worked in the field a bit more, then worked in the ER as a Paramedic/Tech.
Went back to school and became a surgical technologist, I picked it up very naturally and worked in surgery for 12 years eventually spending the last half of this 12 in the open heart suite assisting with heart surgery.
I have kind of seen quite a few aspects of medicine…from the amazing to the sad, to the disgusting, to addicted, to the mentally unhealed.
We are being gouged folks…we are being gouged firstly by the insurance companies.
Then we are gouged by the drug manufactures and the medical device manufactures.
Then we are being gouged by the hospitals, namely the large group (mainly Catholic) conglomerates who care little for the actual patient or their own employees for that matter.
And then some Doctors gouge us on top of that.
If my insurance pays for me to get an MRI, I shouldn’t have another bill for $500 from the Radiologist who sat in his dark room and dictated for 5 mins. while reading it.
But not all Doctors charge ridiculous amounts either, there are some very compassionate and kind Physicians out there who are held back in the manner you are treated because insurance disagrees. And good luck appealing any denial.
I was denied a MRI for years by my insurance because my the blood markers that show up due to inflammation were lacking.
This MRI was requested 4 separate times by 3 doctors…twice by my Rheumatologist, my pain doc., by family doc.
They used the blood work as an excuse even though I sent in clear information that they were WRONG.
Since there is no single blood test for AS, laboratory work may, or may not, be of help. Elevated ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), also known as SED rate, and CRP (C-reactive protein) are common indicators of inflammation. However, these elevated levels are not present in all AS patients and when they are, it can be from other causes such as anemia, infection and cancer.
For example, it is estimated that less than 70% of people with AS have a raised ESR level.
They also used the blood work to deny putting me on Remicaide for the arthritis (too expensive for me to pay out of pocket)…and so I began to falter…I missed work…fell behind in my huge pile of medical bills (which I am still paying off) and then eventually got so bad I became disabled and couldn’t stand for endless hours and do heart surgery.
Mind you…this was my employer that my insurance was through.
I’m sorry, but I think public healthcare is severely needed.
The world should judge the US and our healthcare system very harshly.
If we get a chance to do it, we should take it…because no one should be denied the medication they need to function.
No one should be denied treatment because they can’t afford it.
No one should be making money off of the sick and dying - a family shouldn’t have a $300,000 bill left behind when their family member is gone.
It’s highly unethical and is disgusting considering we are the richest country in the world…we spend more money on our military than the next ten countries combined.
It’s easy if you aren’t ill or sick or know someone who is…but eventually we all will need it, we will all get there…I will always fight to make the healthcare system better, and a single-payer system is better than what we have now by leaps and bounds.
