So when I am not bubbly and friendly people always assume something is wrong or that I am upset and as a result they try to hug me or walk on egg shells around me. This can be frustrating because I am a pretty laid back person, but I get tired of smiling and nodding constantly ot responding to everything they say. I've been trying to be more neutral with new acquaintances, but right now I'm on a roadtrip with my grandparents- I had to go into neutral mode to save energy and now they think I'm mad at them.

There isn 't a way to ease people into it, is there?

You might try explaining what introversion is to your GPs, they may understand that in any given time period an introvert needs to go into quiet reflection mode and it looks from the outside like dissatisfaction but that is not at all what it is.

I get this too. I don't how to stop it, other than changing my own behaviour- which isn't healthy!

Have them read a definition of your type. They may become interested and look into their personality types as well. May not as well... its worth a try.

Take a lifesize photo of your face when you're smiling and then glue it to your face

This will keep most of the human species satisfied that everything is ok whilst you go about your business

It will work for all moods and even when you're asleep
