So hip-hop/rap as a genre has obviously changed/evolved since its origins, and it's now in an era that (in my opinion) resembles the progressive rock era of the 1970s. Rappers are beginning to incorporate other genres of music into their work, and many are beginning to focus lyrical themes on social issues that extend beyond the traditional "gangstas and hos". There also tends to be a lot of irony implemented as a means of mocking the ridiculousness of the mainstream rap industry.
On the other hand, most of these artists tend to be from middle class backgrounds and have been accused of commandeering the genre. There's also the stigma that many modern rappers are just trying to be absurd as a means of producing as many memes as possible.

Has hip-hop finally reached a point of being of artistic/academic value, or is the modern hip-hop scene just a bunch of shit that appeals to kids on tumblr?
