I think it's the symbolism of the diamond that means so much to many people. With that said, I personally think you could take any gemstone and give it that symbolic significance. I've always really loved the idea of having a more unusual engagement/wedding ring, such as one with an aquamarine. I also think one with a ruby would be gorgeous. But, I've always been pretty unconventional. But my point is that many things can symbolize love-- in the end, it's finding that symbolism that resonates with you personally that really matters.
