What causes envy?

focus on validating yourself internally. remind yourself that the reasons why you do things is not to be recognised or rewarded or gain something so superficial as "status", and renew your understandings of what your motivations really are - because you want to improve as a person, or because you want to make the world a better place, or whatever it may be. develop the side of you that is self-motivating.

Agreed.

Moreover, when you find yourself doing anything to manage the perceptions of others, stop that shit. We all do it (and we need to within reason, of course) but people who are prone to feeling envy are more susceptible to caring about what others think and it only exacerbates the underlying problem when they fall prey to the temptation of trying to control how they are perceived. And once you become aware of the fact you do it and consciously watch for it, you'll be amazed at how often it shows up in your life.

You have to be authentic at all times and willing to take whatever ego punishment comes with it. It sucks at first but quickly becomes liberating and reinforcing of genuine confidence.
