I'm really into the detective stuff at the moment. I never have any idea what's going to happen, and I never try to figure it out, I just like watching the story unfold.
We're watching "Shetland" now. We've watched 4 hours of it. Very cool, I'm really enjoying it. The principal actor is one of those guys who you just love to watch perform. When an actor reaches excellence it's like they develop their own style of performance that they apply to the character they're portraying in order to make the character come alive, and it's like this in Shetland with Douglas Henshall. It was like it in Broadchurch with Olivia Colman.
We're also watching Vera, series 6. I absolutely love Vera, it's awesome. I love Brenda Blethyn. I also like the actor who plays the new sergeant, he is OK and he is a great replacement for the old sergeant, I even prefer him. It's kind of a bummer that Vera only includes 4 episodes in each series. I wish they'd make more of them. But I don't think that I've seen all of the episodes, I could maybe get old series on DVD.
I watch Midsomer Murders whenever I notice it on TV, but it's more of a casual thing. I always enjoy it, but I don't LOVE it. The actor in the lead role is good, but not excellent. It also seems a bit dated... it seems like the next generation after Marple and all that, but still kind of hokey, it doesn't really engage me because it's so generically stylised that the characters sort of blend into one... the crimes don't seem as believable or urgent... that sort of thing.
We're also watching Season 6 of "Friendship is Magic". We've only watched 5 episodes (1 a week... I ration it because I am such a huge fan of the show) but we're agreeing that it's not as good as previous seasons. The character development seems to have stalled, it is flattened and not dynamic, I think they need to reconnect with dimensions of the characters that are more conflicted, their inner struggles, like Pinky's tendency to get depressed and needy, or Fluttershy's confidence, Rainbow's education, Rarity's creativity, Applejack's integrity, Twilight's perfectionism. Twilight was always my favourite, but I'm not seeing new dimensions of her anymore. I also have no idea where the series is going now - no one ever mentions the elements of harmony or the round friendship table anymore - there's no direction for the show to take.
