He'll get there. He'll come to you when he's ready. He doesn't sound like a kitty who'll keep on hiding though, especially with him seeking you out a couple times. He just has to come to trust a new person and new surroundings on his own terms, then more snuggles will likely ensue. : )

Aww. It sounds like you're doing all you can do for the time being.
If he stays under there long enough, you might try enticing him with food or a toy to come out. Then he will (hopefully) become more accepting of you, and it will be easier for you to show him where his litter box is. If you're out of the room long enough, it seems like he'd come out and explore some, but idk.

Treats do help, though they aren't a necessity.
If you do get some, try setting them out between you and him, rather than bringing them to him outright.
