2 Step Election Campaign

The second election campaign is in progress. (For the College of Electors).

Do Americans vote for electors, who are then privileged to make their own choice? Or do Americans vote for electors who represent them?

Ie. Is America a representative democracy, or an elected oligarchy?

This is Oligarchy, and the unseen players wield the most power.
The more I delve into this, the crazier it gets.
