I wouldn't say that is is a genre, most of the bands that have been mentioned are considered "indie".

I have a few I would like to share that are along the lines of what has already been posted.

Of Montreal makes me a very happy camper and this song happens to be one of my favorites by them.

Fanfarlo

MGMT

Animal Collective

I am not sure if all of those quite fit, but even if they don't they are great!

Would it be too presumptuous of me to post some music from the bands I am/was in here?

I'm a fan of Metric, Goldfrapp, and Beirut, which you guys listed earlier. I also like Andrew Bird, Neutral Milk Hotel (although they're no longer around), Arcade Fire, and Elbow... not sure if they're all exactly "avant garde."

How would you define avant garde?

From Wikipedia:

Avant-garde music is a term used to characterize music which is thought to be ahead of its time, i.e. containing innovative elements or fusing different genres.

Historically speaking, musicologists primarily use the term "avant-garde music" for the radical, post-1945 tendencies of a modernist style in several genres of art music[1] after the death of Anton Webern in 1945.[2] In the 1950s the term avant-garde music was mostly associated with serial music.[1]

Today the term may be used to refer to any other post-1945 tendency of modernist music not definable as experimental music, though sometimes including a type of experimental music characterized by the rejection of tonality.[2]

It also lists the following genre's in the "See Also Section":

* Aleatoric music
* Indeterminacy in music
* Surrealist music
* Avant-garde metal
* Space Rock
* Noise music

I'd not heard of most of this. The only band I thought of when I saw this title was Can, which has already been mentioned. I think there could be lots of very fun exploration in some of those "see also" sections though!

I do like the Battles, but I think they are considered more "math" rock than anything avant garde.

Agreed.

David Sylvian - Small Metal Gods (perhaps more experimental than avant garde...)

Well, since this thread has a decidedly "indie" bent, I'm gonna post tunes from my bands. They definitely belong in the indie genre, and I'm itching to share. And besides, I think some of you might even like it. ;)

These songs are form Mice Parade, the band that's currently active.
(I, uh, I don't know what's up with the pictures. No one from the band posted these on Youtube, so it was none of our doing, and it really has nothing to do with the music.)
[ETA: And the first one, unfortunately, is cut short. But I couldn't find a fuller version...]

This is from an earlier band... This is all I could find on Youtube, maybe not my favorite representation, but that's all that's out there. This song is from an album that came out in '99.

Khlyst is excellent, though rather challenging to listen to since their music is pretty harsh, even for me...which is saying a lot considering that I listen to a lot of extreme metal, harsh industrial, dark ambient, etc.

On the more classical side of things, I would highly recommend Elend's newest few cds, particularly A World In Their Screams.

I've yet to hear anything that would be considered indie that is enjoyable to me at all.
