I'd rather fail pursuing what I really want than not try at all.
This can certainly be a motivator. Seeing a story through to its conclusion, one way or another.
It doesn't make for a stable life, but changing companies can be a path to explore career options and improve your income. I did this for a while and I'd say it benefited me at the cost of some inconvenience.
Another angle to explore is smaller companies. Large companies mean layers of management and redundancy. A smaller company might require you to take on more responsibility and give you direct interaction with people in positions to help you in your career. Personally, I find I grow more in my career when thrown into the deep end a bit and left to forge my own processes. It's a bit nerve-racking but never boring.
