SOPA has shut down Megaupload! many independent artist and regular people will suffer from this. Once again the big corporations win against the will of the majority :(
this is only the beginning of this fascist movement. The internet will never be the same, freedom of speech has suffered a terrible defeat.

Are you sure it isn't blacked out in protest like a lot of the other websites that would be affected by SOPA?

Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.

The site's founders have been charged with violating piracy laws.
Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (

More interesting are the tally of 'downed' websites by anonymous:

Department of Justice,
Universal Music Group,
RIAA
Motion Picture Association of America.
And the next target appears to be whitehouse.gov

So, when do I get the chance to vote in the US elections now that I am subject to their laws?

Fortunately this avatar is a free use meme, therefore I won't get @Deathjam the jail by using it.

Megaupload's demise had nothing to do with SOPA. SOPA isn't law, yet. Just goes to show, what do they need SOPA for, again?

Why hate on the US&A? It was NZ who handed over their own residents. And you know those arrested guys knew they were breaking US law, and were probably warned several times. If I was them, I'd be pissed at NZ and my lawyers (because surely they would have procured legal advice after getting warnings from the US).

But I wanted to read what you had to write. Sad Feelings is sad
You did? I was desperately attempting not to be smart alecky.
  • The gist of it was, Megaupload made lots of money selling other people's stuff, and they were asked to stop repeatedly, and didn't stop.
  • Cyberwarfare is cool (digressing into movie plot... please disregard)
  • And surely pirating on the level Megaupload did it is illegal in most countries, not just the US? (confess ignorance of laws, but it does seem like pirating would be illegal in most countries)
  • I regularly use copyrighted material, produced by YES ARTISTS even if some people don't like them, and what a lame excuse for stealing. I don't think you're a "real artist" so I will pirate your work. Nice. These copyright holders/artists are often self-employed and rely on royalty fees to, you know, do evil shit like buy groceries. And I do not steal their work when I use it, I use it with either compensation or permission or some sort of arrangement that works out for both parties.
  • And why are pirates good and corporations bad? They both exist to do the same thing, make money. It is about profit, not politics or idealism.
  • And I found this article that says Megaupload spent $8 million on yacht rentals in the Mediterranean, which frankly sounds awesome, and a lot more like the 1% than any of the hard working artists I know.
  • And it had nothing to do with SOPA, which has been shelved. Clearly, we don't need SOPA to stop pirating.
