There was no bail set for the one in court started all this. Guess they may be paying him, too. Anything's possible.
 
Need to make a factual correction as I wasn't 100% certain of when and how the Laotian involvement was released to the public. It actually was part of a major classified document leak in 1971 to the press that brought the information out and led to the declassification. A member of Nixon's Cabinet went on to even state it was a "gross overclassification". A nice analogue to what is occurring currently.

Their objective depends entirely on what the people decide it is on their forum....so yes the potential for the missuse of power is there

I think their actions will have to be judged on a case by case basis.

In the case of wikileaks though I think it is good that they are making a stand.

The powers that be are feeling threatened by the internet and it is good to know that if they do try and control access to information through the internet that there are people who will actively oppose this.

To what extent should the privacy act extend to the public sphere? If it turns out to be a violation, then the offended parties should be able to sue wikileaks or press charges.

Wikileaks is like a repeat of the 'pentagon papers', it's history repeating itself!

I think a key line in the link you have posted is:

'A 1996 article in the New York Times said that the Pentagon Papers "demonstrated, among other things, that the Johnson Administration had systematically lied, not only to the public but also to Congress, about a subject of transcendent national interest and significance".'

Here's a clip of Noam Chomsky condemning the government for their "Profound Hatred for Democracy on the Part of Our Political Leadership" which has been exposed in the cables released by wikileaks:

One point he makes is how the US media has claimed that arab opinion is against Iran when in fact polls show that arabs do not feel threatened by Iran and that the only Arabs who are against Iran are despotic leaders who are clients of the US and Israel.

This obviously gives the public the false perception that there is support out there in the world for actions aggressive or otherwise against Iran....when there isn't

John Pilgers new film 'The War You Don't See' has just been released

In the second half of the film he interviews Julian Assange and discusses the role of wikileaks in todays media.

The film does contain some disturbing images and is not light viewing, but if you are interested in what is happening and how journalists are failing to keep the public informed then it is worth watching:
