Hi love, thanks for your message. I've been very well! I took some time away from the forum in January to take care of applications/deadlines that were coming up, and have generally taken time away to think about where I'm headed and the direction(s) I want my life to take. I have loved being here but I'm not sure I will be around in the weeks/months to come, although it is something I am still deliberating (as per my intuition).

No ortho-vanillin is not used in the perfume industry because it smells bad to some. We have a bottle of it in the lab (it's a yellow crystaline solid) because it is used in some TLC stains, and that's how I found out. And nope, I can't taste PTC paper .

Haha, that is thought to be one of the reasonings for these genes that they arised for natrual selection.

I also discovered something really interesting that I might try to start an independent research project of sorts over the summer (partly because I have found no research into this). I discovered that ortho-vanillin is actually a smelling version of PTC. It started when I found a bottle in the lab, smelled it, and found it to smell lovely. Then someone else smelled it and said it was gross. I tested it on my ochem lab students. Perfect 50/50 split. Some though it smelled lovely, others thought it was nasty. Also note that para-vanillin is the stuff in vanilla extract so it is slightly different.

That's called PTC tasting. I am the lucky one that can't taste it at all.
