A friend of mine retired from a large sporting goods store after being there 35 years. I worked in the same department with him for about two years. They gave him a speech and handed him a $35 watch with store logo on it off the shelf.
Afterwards, he told me he would rather have gotten ten bucks. He placed the watch on the counter and left it there. I patted him gently on his back as he was leaving.

My Father was a type-setter for printing presses. One cold morning he was told his position was not needed any longer. 26 years.
