[h=1]MBTI® Personality Type: Overview of INTJ, The "Strategist"[/h]
INTJ’s are also called the “The Scientists” or “Masterminds”. INTJ is an acronym which stands for Introversion, Intuition, Thinking and Judgement. It is one of the sixteen personality types defined under the
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)®. MBTI® was developed by prominent psychiatrist Carl Jung and presented in his famous work,
Psychological Types. The indicator has its foundations in theories of cognitive function and is a psychological categorization based on Jung’s clinical observations. Efficient application of the tool gives an idea about the outlook, perceptions and thought process that a person has.
The MBTI® categorization is based on the following analysis:
- How does one get energy? – Through Introversion
- How does one take in information? – Through Intuition
- How does one make decisions? – Through Thinking
- How does one view the world? – Through Judgement

Personality Traits[/h] The INTJ personality type is considered to be one of the rarest in the population.
They are highly enigmatic and love all forms of mysteries, puzzles and conundrums.
A high level of intelligence is almost given in a typical INTJ, and so is self-confidence. They derive their confidence from knowledge which they gather from absorbing everything they can. In early life, many INTJs are bookworms!
INTJs have almost all the positive mental attributes. They are quick thinkers. They are deep thinkers. They are fine decision-makers. They are creative and extremely articulate. With such an arsenal, they end up with leadership roles that the society eventually thrusts upon them. Though they do well, generally they are not seekers of power and would rather stay away from being the center of attention if they can help it.
They have a high level of curiosity as they seek to better everything that they come in contact with. The underlying thought process is always to make something original, more efficient and/or more elegant. In essence, they strive for perfection.
INTJs dislike anything that is not sensible. At certain times, they might also find it challenging to explain their own emotions. Their hunt for rationality may also hurt the emotions of people around them. Traditions, customs and social interactions in which they see no logic are completely disregarded, at times, at the cost of their close relationships.
Understanding people and reading between the lines is not something that comes naturally to them. They are themselves quite honest and direct. They may become judgmental where they fail to understand another person’s feelings.

Relationships[/h] Amusingly, one area which is the biggest mystery to an INTJ is the ‘method’ to attract a partner! Given to deep analysis, they take this habit in the field of dating as well and suffer as they try to come to terms with the norms and rituals which defy reasoning.
In fact, once they relax and give-up actively ‘hunting’ for a partner, they do well as their originality and confidence come through.
The initial phase of the relationship can be difficult as their partners begin to comprehend their many quirks. But after that, things get easier as INTJs tend to grow into a relationship. They are quite caring about their partner and extremely loyal as well. Their relationships tend to be long-lasting because once their partners discover them fully, they find it tough let go.
At all stages of a newly budding relationship, they need reciprocation and feedback because they are not their usual confident selves during this learning curve.
Their relationships with partners having extroverted personalities are more likely to succeed because they create a complement to the INTJ and as a couple, find balance. Also partners with higher perception allow them to be more grounded in reality. Hence INTJs do well with
ENFP or
ENTP counter-parts.

Career[/h] With the talent that they have, INTJs do well in almost everything. They tend to pick a career path early and stick to it for lengthy amounts of time.
INTJ’s tend to excel most in Science and Engineering fields. They also find research appealing across a variety of topics. It’s not unlikely to find people with PhDs in fields like applied physics, quantitative finance and mathematics are INTJs.
They are great at strategy and planning and love to analyse data. Being part of important think-tanks which define vision, goals and execution of corporates or even nations is natural and fulfilling for them.
They do well in most jobs where they can work alone and as per their rules. They are less likely to enjoy structured team environments or client facing job profiles.
