I suppose it holds more power for me than it used to, as I listened to it on the way to the hospital to see my father's body after his death in '09 (and in my memory it's still kind of linked to that event), but it was still fairly sad before then.

Hate to ruin anyone's idea of sad, but you haven't heard sad until you really listen to this song when you start to get older... especially for us men, sons, fathers... The most tragic part of the song took place about 6 years after it was written, when Harry Chapin died of a heart attack while driving on the Long Island Expressway in 1981.

Another reason this one gets me, besides the obvious sights of the video, is that Ginny (Virginia Leigh Owens) has been blind since she was two. The references to valleys and darkness take on a deeper meaning for her.
