hmm, next time I feel this way, I'll have to see if it is cognitive dissonance, I've never thought about it that way.

When I take the big 5 personality tests, I always score high in agreeableness. I asked my sister, who knows me well, if I seem agreeable. She said she kind of doubts it, because I never take people at face value. I always reinterpret what people say or believe so I can find something of value in them, but in the process, completely change their narrative of how they are viewing the world.

I think that's true, and that creates a tension. I can't fully commit to a persona or a group on other people's terms, but I want to participate. That's why I'm both within and without a group at the same time. I am constantly finding the line between following and asserting, and what point not correcting people's assumptions becomes dishonesty.

Yes I think we see the Gatsby quote in two different lights. It’s good to see how others personally interact with and interpret something as simple as a movie quote or a lyric.

When I hear the quote in this particular scene I get a feeling that he’s also speaking on his own regrets, in a way. As though he has matured beyond, and perhaps even disapproves of the scene he is watching when looking up at the party at Daisy’s apartment. And yet, another part of him longs to give in to the temptation to join.

Sort of a fear of missing out that is silenced by Nick Carraway’s own moral compass, if you will.

The feeling he exudes from Daisy’s apartment window as he watches below seems to be a moment of shame - for having given in to the peer pressure that led him to stay at the party and get drunk in the first place. A feeling that grows of a more responsible version of himself - looking up and him feeling embarrassed even, by the choice to stay.

Nick is writing the novel because he is disgusted in what he participated in New York and is trying to make sense of it, so I think what you are saying is correct for the story.

But as someone who is trying to follow my moral compass and be responsible, what do I do? Do I never participate in anything because there is always something wrong? Its not good to be alone.

For me, I've come to realize that too much inaction is wrong even if that prevents me from making a mistake. I have to live life. I have to risk making mistakes in order to learn how to create a situation I want to be part of. But if I make a mistake, I try to make it right, even at a high cost.

Yes, I have the movie poster of Daisy and Jay framed, own the movie, and am on my second read of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. Gatsby is fantastic. There are a lot of themes woven into the tapestry indeed.

It is wise to try things in our lives. I believe this to be true. It is more or less what we didn’t at least try to do, usually out of fear, that we often later regret, true. Even God created Eve upon seeing Adam because it wasn’t good that he should be alone. There is nothing wrong at all with people choosing this path.

You will make mistakes along the way. To err is human. From my own mistakes I have learned a great deal, indeed. This is the way of life.

I also recently made this choice and I couldn’t be happier about the outcome.

It is good to be open to the possibilities of your life. ✨

I have a few examples of how I'm trying to walk the line.

I live in a hippie mountain town. The kind of people who live in this town are inspiring, but frustrating. There is lots of amazing art, creativity, but along with beliefs I can't accept.

One source of constant conflict is over astrology. I do not believe astrology can predict anything about your life, but I love mythology and symbolism. To build a bridge, I made this:

This is a 3D model of the solar system I created using NASA data. If you double click, you can center the perspective on any planet. You can also change the view from the rocky planets to the whole solar system, and also each moon system:

This dissolves boundaries, which makes people on both sides of the issue uneasy. For the scientism crowd, asserting the heliocentric model shuts down astrology. For the astrology crowd, asserting how planets look from earth shuts down objection from people who don't know about epicycles. This chart uses real data to transition between both perspective, and many more. If the geocentric model is egocentric, and the heliocentric model is abstract-rational, then what I created is a multi-polar model, only possible with computers.

When you can see the orbits, there are a lot of natural questions. Why does astrology only care about the angle of the planets against the background stars, and not the distance of the planets to earth? If humans colonize mars, what would astrology be on Mars, since the planets would have totally different relative orbits?

This is a gentle challenge to both the scientism and astrology orthodoxy. I learned a ton making this, and helps me appreciate the beauty of nature. I can use this to have a wonderful conversation with anyone, and made something that I can give as a gift. Most importantly, I can stand 100% behind this.

One more quick example. I love Taoism, especially the Tao Te Ching, but when I tell people, if they are familiar at all, they bring up the I Ching, which has 64 descriptions of combinations of yin and yang in symbols called hexagrams. The I Ching started as a divination method from prehistoric China, but has also be interpreted purely in a philosophical and poetic context.

I made this diagram to appreciate the symbolism and mathematics of the I Ching as well as integrate multiple historical perspectives into one integrated mandala, inspired by the moon phases on the outside:

In both of these, I've taken what I find inspiring and put them in a form where I can 100% stand behind while not excluding the people and perspectives I disagree with. I'm trying to be constructive and active. I don't have the time to do something like this for everything but this is where my heart is. I want to build unity without forcing conformity.

And for both, I'm in this grey area. I'm using modern astronomy to connect the muse Urania and ancient mythology. I'm combining binary mathematics with symbolism and poetry. I feel we are all one spirit at the end of the day, and what I'm devoted to is the good I see in other people. Every person is a reflection of my higher self trying to teach me how to be more of who I truly am. This puts me between many groups, but I can never put both of my feet in one group or the other.

The Oculist billboard would be a cool poster to create, indeed. I found some amazing ones on Redbubble. They have a lot of independent artists with unique Gatsby prints there.

The hexagrams remind me of Enneagram and tritype, in particular. That’s a very cool system, man.

So in your town they follow astrology? That sounds like a good book plot. I don’t beleive in astrology but the astronomy aspect is interesting.

Hexagrams are more like MBTI because it is binary rather than trinary. It is a fascinating rabbit hole, let me know if you'd like more information. This is the best resource I've found for hexagram descriptions: https://jamesdekorne.com/GBCh/GBCh.htm . I especially like the "Image" section. When I'm out in nature and see a change in weather, a mood of an environment or animal behavior, I try to figure out which hexagram fits that situation.

In addition to inspiring me to learn astronomy and symbolism, the biggest thing I got out of astrology is an appreciation of the different calendar and time keeping systems. In agrarian societies, you need to know when to plant crops. The position of the sun against the stars is a universal seasonal clock. People across disparate villages can synchronize their calendars using the position of the stars. Part of astrology is the realization that the yearly cosmic rhythm is orderly rather than purely chaotic. In many mythologies, the gods that conquer chaos and create the state also create a calendar. In increasing secular societies, nature is one thing we all share and directly experience.

Normally, establishing calendars was the job of the priestly class, but with computers, you can do that work yourself. I'm currently working on a solar-lunar-seasonal clock. When it is finished, I can put all the world's holidays side by side, both so I can explore different cultures through festivals and to find universal patterns to create my own meta-holidays that I can then chose to practice within different traditions.

Thing is, if you approach it from a human perspective, it is a win.

That said, the bean counters were seen to smile too.
