Oh, one of the posts in my blog has a piece of music called"The Blue Notebooks," by Max Richter, and there is a section in which there is a speaking part that refers to a quote by Nabokov on the species of butterfly called Polyommatus blues (he was an avid lepidopterist). I was racking my brain for a Lolita connection in my posts and that was the closest I came, lol!

I haven't got the patience to cross-check on my phone (I would if I was on my computer), but I wonder if electroshock was ever used in lieu of anesthetics?
The point was that pain medicine needs to find drugs as, or more effective than Morphine for pain, without the psychological effects of Morphine. Romantic painful, clear-minded, drug-free deaths aren't the goal; pain free, clear-minded drugged deaths are medical fiction for many on account of the very limited arsenal of pain medications. Nevertheless, this goal should pursued with more resources.
Perhaps neurochemistry excludes the possibility of pain blocking, without detrimental psychological effects, but perhaps it doesn't... ?
These were fracture patients, and the effects of the pain killers was pretty much setting back their recovery by at least a week, if not more. Terminal patients is a different matter, but I recall a character in 'To Kill a Mockingbird', weaning herself off morphine, in order to die with a clear mind.
*hugs* I can only imagine. I lost my favourite pet almost 2 years ago. We only had him for 8 months, so I cant imagine what it would be like to have them for their life time. Thinking of you xxx
