The reasons its fun though are usually not qualities that a person wants in an employee: it was fun to kill, take extreme risks, etc. I mean yeah it was fun but only because I liked the possibility of blowing someone up/away.

Could be a few reasons why it's doing that and I really have no way to guess about it, unfortunately.
If mkinitcpio -p linux took properly, and your kernel image on /boot was updated properly, my guess would be to double check GRUB configuration.
