So basically, I'm open to the idea the laws *are* essential to mass, charge, etc, just that it doesn't seem we know anything about these things besides quantitative info+that there are apparently laws. Any further advance that tells me something *essential* to mass/charge/etc that is concrete/not just quantitative would solve this.

In other words, instead of treating them as abstract sets (which have virtually any number of relations among them), we isolate a particular variety called the laws of physics. The difficulty I have with this is that generally (via Hume-style arguments) I don't think we have any reason from physics alone to think the laws of nature are essential to the physics quantities i.e. that they couldn't have been otherwise.

I think maybe I've crystallized my understanding even further of the orthodox physicalism issue. I think a way to formulate it is that basically the only non-abstract/purely mathematical notion present in the orthodox varieties is that there are *particular* laws of nature relating the various physical quantities.
