Corona / Wuhan virus

Desperate times.... Well they are trying to prepare for a situation like Italy. There are doctors at hospitals where I am who are testing positive.

I've been saying for a while now that it's way more widespread here already than anyone realizes.
We are still just doing somewhat minimal testing. It's a bummer. Meanwhile politicians are patting themselves on their backs.

For sure. I agree. Just 2 weeks ago our governor kept telling us we were at low risk and to carry on as usual. THEN! State of emergency and NOW state health Dept is suggesting there could be 60k in this state with it and everything's shut down. It's been a shit show that could have been avoided or slowed down if it was taken seriously back in early February. It's pathetic that we can't test as widely as we need to..... Seems like unless you are a celebrity or a politician!

This might be a silly question because the mindset of most people (especially western) is that medicine should be left to the professionals AT ALL COSTS. When you catch a cold or flu, what really can you do other than to just let it take its course?

What are hospitals doing in this situation that regular people cannot?

Caring for those who have a severe response. So the elderly and those with other health risks. People have been needing ventilators and need supportive care while their body hopefully fights it. Otherwise, if it's mild they tell you to stay at home.

A friend who is a nurse shared this account.

Well prioritisng masks is a start. N-95 masks are somethign that can be dropped on hospitals which is helpful. Gets them where they need to be.

Machines and ventilation. Pumping pure oxygen can help recovery.

Also Anti-biotic drips, help the body fight other non-virus based infections by suppressing bacterial fungal and parasitic infections where possible so all energy can be diverted to fighting the virus.

There's also the placebo effect where people feel better taking pills and having drips even if they do nothing. The more invasive the proceedure the bigger the placebo effect. This can work even if you are aware it is a placebo.

Hey guys,

I hope all of you are doing okay and minding yourselves. ♥

For the second day in a row, the Irish health authorities have reported a decrease in confirmed cases... It went from 191 on Thursday to 123 on Friday and 102 today. I really hope this is not a fluke and that the numbers will continue to decrease. I have to say I'm proud of the way people have reacted here. Overall we've been disciplined and mindful of each other.

Is the border closed in Ireland? I'd assume not since the Brits aren't fully closed yet as far as I am aware.

No, as far as I'm aware they're not closed.

That said, being on an island comes with some natural advantages I suppose.

Northern Ireland is roughly in the same situation in terms of cases.

True, but if it spirals out of control in England if the border is open it could spread back into Ireland again from the North.

England's spread enough plagues to Ireland historically, we don't need to send another one.

Jesus that's scary

I think for me in particular, because I've had pneumonia a few times and I know that feeling of having your lungs filled with crud quite well.
But normally it's somewhat of a slow process with pneumonia. I can't imagine how terrifying it'd be to just be mostly fine one day and have filled/collapsed lungs the next.

Indeed. And you'll notice the names of those plagues usually begin with the letter C: coronavirus, Cromwell... :D

My ex (apparently, I'm treating her like a human again and attempting to give her terrified and sobbing self some emotional support and motivation) told me of a patient at her hospital. 21 yr old female from Ball State University was at home with her mom not feeling well, but overall fine. The very next day she was in ICU on a ventilator close to death. As of this morning, the patient was being transported to a bigger hospital in Indianapolis that could treat her better. Her mom is in quarantine at my exes hospital.
