Technically it is extremely infectious but not very contagious. How contagious something is is a measure of how easily it is transmitted. How infectious it is is a measure of how likely someone is to come down with the disease once exposed to the pathogen, after it has already been transmitted.
Those exposed to the Ebola virus are very likely to get sick, but this virus does not spread as well as most. The fact that it requires direct contact with bodily fluids and is not airborne is a major reason for that. Also very important is the fact that victims of this virus do not become contagious before they become symptomatic. Those capable of spreading the disease are not easily mobile. They also have less time to spread the disease because it kills to quickly. It is not the kind of illness that can go into a temporary period of dormancy where the carrier seems to have recovered yet can still spread it to others. Killing the host is not a very good evolutionary strategy.
The most contagious diseases are those which most easily spread while their carriers still look and feel healthy. There are some studies which imply that many common viruses make their victims feel better than usual when they are at their most contagious, causing them to become more social and extroverted so as to put them in contact with more new hosts. Some diseases even adjust their carriers pheromones to make them more attractive to potential mates.
Thank you for this excellent information about viral disease.
Fascinating....
