Corona / Wuhan virus

in Oregon, Hillsboro to be exact. . schools are closed, churches are closed, city offices are closed. . but yeah, I can hole up, read, play guitar. . .do whatever I want. .it is a time of introspection. It should also be a time of housework, but I'm not there yet

Yeah, everything is closed in the North East, too. I think most places are closing school and having people stay home, etc. I was just wondering if anyone knew people who had it or were in quarantine because they were exposed to it.

How is the US doing now in general?

Here in the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) they are tightening up the National Emergency status. We're not in a state of Quarantine yet but the amount of cases is increasing by the day (around 190 new cases today in Belgium). So there's the possibility that there will be strong measures. France seems to be doing a lot worse as well. They should just call a Quarantine emergency over the whole continent, honestly. There will be massive economical repercussions, but this is much more important.

So Europe is the new center.
It is, yes.

Finland is doing nothing... You can get tested only if you are in the risk group and have the symptoms (you can't even call to a local health center anymore if you suspect having the virus!), we're not closing borders, not closing schools or kindergartens (though schools are now closing by their own decisions not something what is decided by our government), no national emergency status yet etc. I must have forgotten something, lol. We're basically doing what Sweden is doing currently.

I'm so disappointed in our government but this is nothing new to us in this country that they would actually make decisions.

Yeah, Scandinavia in general seems to be having problems as well with the spread. It's unbelievable how the governments of different European countries aren't focusing on what's happening on the countries around them (especially what's happening in Italy and Spain). It's not because it's not spreading widely now that it won't a week later. Even if there's still a lack of actual numbers, you can at least notice the evolution of the spread. It's more up to the European people now to take enough precaution.

Yes, it's really unbelievable. They don't seem to understand prevention at all, which is crucial. If we don't do anything... Things might get even more worse than in Italy or Spain which are actually doing at least something. Norway and Denmark seem to take things seriously, which is good but Finland and Sweden in the other hand not so much. Spreading will only get worse if nothing is done to prevent it.

I'm very glad though that at least the citizens of my country are doing the best they can to prevent it, like staying at home if possible. Streets are so empty. ^-^

My lack of faith in our contemporary government has been frequent for a long time, and it makes me 100x sadder to realize that what I’ve been believing since forever which is: "Our society is not united as it was supposed to be, even though we’re living in the same countries, same cities and we are all human, same privileges are not provided to every group" is true.
And I don’t know you guys, but it makes me really frustrated to see how media is dealing with all of this, at least where I live they are trying to convince us that this episode is not a big deal, they are trying to make official transmissions relying on the fact that “it’s only a flu therefore there shouldn’t have this desperation that people are creating.”
I believe that things are only about to get worse, but the fact that our superiors are trying to tranquilize us by not making this a big deal is a disrespect towards the ones who have less information, excluding them from preventing themselves.
I just really wanted to believe that the government is not trying to use this chaotic episode as a political manipulation... I wish...

Take good care of yourselves, everyone. You can save other people by doing so

https://currently.att.yahoo.com/news/italians-over-80-left-die-151225436.html

Coronavirus victims in Italy will be denied access to intensive care if they are aged 80 or more or in poor health should pressure on beds increase, a document prepared by a crisis management unit in Turin propose.

Some patients denied intensive care will in effect be left to die, doctors fear.

Yes...that's the hard reality of the Italian health infrastructure being at its absolute maximum. They shift from prioritising those who need medical support the most to those who has the best survival chance. That's why it's absolutely
crucial for the European countries to take as much precaution as possible (so they won't get in the same situation as Italy is in now, which is the worst case). And a lot of respect to everyone there doing their best to support the situation in Italy.

ah Jesus, the world is truly fucked:
Ireland Orders All Of Its Pubs To Close On Eve Of St Patrick’s Day
The decision, made amid coronavirus concerns, came just before people were expected to pack the bars for the national day.

WHY was this virus being tested and toyed with in the first place? Why was it not destroyed? Someone else wish to chime in? Is it wise to play with such things? I have a lot of questions now and tomorrow.
Only 59 cases in Russia today.

How many places in the world had this thing?

https://yubanet.com/scitech/scienti...ng-for-the-source-of-covid-19-why-it-matters/

Information that gave the first clues was released in mid-January 2020 when the full viral genomic sequence of the new coronavirus from a patient sample was published. It showed a new coronavirus – SARS-CoV2 – belonging to the same group as the severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-CoV) which caused the 2003 SARS outbreak.

But the new virus differed significantly, raising questions about its origin. The strongest speculation has been that the virus is somehow linked to the market given two thirds of the first batch of people infected had had ties with it. But even this hasn’t been proved yet. And subsequent investigations indicate that the first patient – who started experiencing symptoms as early as 1 December 2019 – had no reported link to the market, or the other patients.

Several questions remain. Most importantly, there’s no clear data on what the source was. But tracking down the origin of the illness is important because it’s essential to know who or what infected “patient zero”. Understanding the specific circumstances, including human behaviour and activities, that led to this pandemic may provide clues about risk factors for future outbreaks.

China has <100 new cases daily, while Spain, Germany and Italy have >1000. So Europe is the new center.

Will see how it goes when China slowly lifts the restrictions, of course.

"Officially". Forgive me if I don't trust the official statistics coming out of China.

A new SARS type outbreak has been predicted in China for a long time.

I'm sure the source will be found eventually. China has a bad habit of not enforcing health laws because it 'Hampers economic growth'.
